Work Weekend
May 11, 2023
Another work weekend in the books and it was a good one at Porters Lake. The sun finally came out and gave us very pleasant day to to get Spring clean up started at the club. Barry Miller, Grounds Chairman, organized a great group of members. Everyone got to meet our new Caretaker Scott McCluer at breakfast and lunch and he got to see what the members of Porters Lake can get done. He did his best to get everything in place for Saturday and worked with the members throughout the day.
As always a crew of members cleaned up and mulched the clubhouse and entrance to the club. It always looks so nice when we get it all finished. Andy had brought in a large amount of firewood that needed to be cut and split and the group made short work of that, refilling the wood pile for next fall. More uncut logs were brought in from the park and are ready to be cut and split for next season.
The work started early at the Honeymoon cabin on Friday with Rick Witherow leading a crew of The Tomlinson’s and Jere Dunkelberger , with his Kubota, to get the area excavated and demo of the old walk way and steps. On Saturday they were joined by various members to rebuild and restore the walk way, steps and front beam as well as shore up the supports of the front porch. The rebuilt dock was in place and it is ready for the summer season. Take a ride out and take a look. There are a few things that need to be finished up and a new roof is in the future for the cabin.
The Berlinger brothers with help from Tom Senn and nephew Stewart removed the old pressure tanks from the basement, not an easy task! Also Adam Hartzell, my grandson Ty and son-in-law Al did some clean up around the grounds. They tackled about 10 years worth of ashes in the burn oven and cleaned off the roof of the Trap house.
A large group of members did some major work at the Pickerel Boathouses. In the morning we started mulching the bank to help stop the erosion and protect the Lupine plants. In the afternoon we finished up the mulch and then the major clean up really started with Jere’s Kubota, chainsaws and sweat equity. Dead trees and piles of junk were cleaned up and moved away, opening up the area and just making it look a whole lot better. Get over and take a look at it when you get the chance. I don’t think we have had any clean up over there for years and it showed.
A special thanks to Tim Primrose for trucking up stone, mulch and compost earlier in the week and then bring his equipment and skills to spread the stone and compact it on the roads around the clubhouse and the south shore. Also, thanks to Jere Dunkelberger for his expertise and his machine, we really ran him ragged at Pickerel in the afternoon. No job is too big for Jere and the Kubota. Both Tim and Jere regularly use their machines and skills to do projects at the lake. It is much appreciated.
Matt provided a great lunch and I think he must have quite a bit of beer left over because afternoon production exceeded our normal output.
The following members participated in order of sign in sheet.
